The engine was really turning the rpm, can't remember what it was. that was in 66, and I'm now in the 65's myself.Maybe a 3.73 for the road. I'd try a 4.11 if I had a 700 trans.Jan 4, 2010 · IMO 4.88's are probably alittle better suited for 33's because I think your rpm's are going to be too high with 31's. I think i'm at about 2800rpm at 65mph in 5th gear with my setup. I'm not sure how much higher it would rev with 31's and 4.88 gears though. Hopefully someone who's familiar with this setup can chime in.

I have a Dana 44 with an Ox locker and 4.88 gears. I don't know if my gears are thick cut or thin. The carrier break is ~2" and there is a spacer that is ~1/4". 1.33x10.50 MTs, 2.7 5sp, 4.88s for about 2yrs now...had 4.56s before that and 4.30s (stock) before that. Currently running 35's and plan to go to 37's when my tires wear down some more. 4.88's was the perfect option for me.

More importantly, The 4.88 uses an 8 tooth pinion, vs. the 9 tooth pinion for the 4.56.
