Oregon's basketry traditions use a variety of native plants as raw materials. Create a container out of natural materials that you can find outside, such as tall grasses. Native American basket weaving designs varied among tribes and was created from different environmental elements that existed in different regions. Sea grasses, swamp ash, black ash, sweet grass, birch bark, split river cane, and spruce root have all been used in Native American basket weaving.Whether utilizing techniques of coiling, plating or twining, almost every tribe produced some form of basketry. It is in these contexts that the Southwest Museum of the American Indian, Los Angeles, Calif., part of the Autry National Center, has organized ⁔he Art of Native American Basketry: A Living Tradition,†on view through May 6, 2012.
