Why is the winchester 9422 so expensive

My BIL has this really clean Winchester lever action 9422M in .22 Win Mag and is curious about the value. He has Ben told everything between $700-$2k What say you. Serial number shows made about 1983.

Feb 16, 2013 · The Winchester was a better made gun and more expensive to produce. Used 9422s are selling for more than a new Golden Boy and even more than a new Marlin 39A. Nothing against the Henry, but its painted, alloy receiver can't match up against the 9422's steel, blued receiver in terms of quality, nor are the other parts up to the quality of a 9422. John Wayne never shot a Winchester lever with sissy checkering! I have a first-year Model 9422 as new in the box, and a second-year Model 9422M as new in the box, and I would not take $1300 for either. I watch Models 9422 when they come up on GunBroker, and nice ones without a box can get pretty close to $1000.For a 22 lr the Winchester 9422 or the Marlin 39A are both great rifles. You can usually get a used Marlin cheaper than a Winchester because the Marlin is still made. You won't be dissapointed in the 9422. ... My 9422 is in the 18,000 SN range so it was one of the early models that Winchester made sure was put together correctly.

The name of course, 9422 implies that it's a .22 version of the Model 94, but we all know that's not true. Others point out that while it's not one of them either, it is in some ways more similar to the Model 92 than the 94.Might be considered an "apples/oranges" comparison, comparing my BL-22 to my Winchester 94/22M.
