The 2 engines were night & day. The earliest version (in the '13) did not have a fuel rail system that works, so had all of the problems pulling hills as mentioned plus my check engine light would come on 10+ times a day. My '15 solved all the problems and was a great engine.

My exhaust back pressure valve behind turbo is bad and ive ran it with it wired in open position with no noticeable issues. Everything i read leads me to believe back pressure behind turbo is absolutely not needed even on a newer emissions engine. All paccar engines require initial overhead done at around 40k. Then every 120-150k. My paccar has over 400k and no problems. I do my own engine maintenance unless it's warranty or emissions related. The overhead is not hard to do on these engines. Try not to idle extensively as it' really hard on dpf filter.
